One of the most critical hazards is the emission of sparks or incandescent particles from the diesel engine exhaust system. These particles—originating from incomplete combustion, glowing soot, or metallic fragments—can act as an ignition source upon contact with flammable environments, potentially leading to fire or explosion.

Broadly, there are two primary approaches to mitigating the risk of spark and hot particle emissions in diesel exhausts. The second approach, widely adopted across various applications, focuses on risk reduction through exhaust stream cooling and the thermal suppression of hot particles. In this method, rather than relying solely on mechanical particle separation, the objective is to reduce the temperature of the particulates and exhaust gases to a level where they can no longer function as an ignition source. The fundamental principle of this technique is based on the mixing of exhaust flow with ambient dilution air. By entraining fresh air into the exhaust stream, the temperature of the gas mixture is lowered, subsequently causing a drop in the temperature of the hot particles. Once these particles fall below the critical ignition temperature of combustible materials, the risk of fire is effectively neutralized.

Reducing the temperature of hot particles below the auto-ignition threshold ensures that even if suspended particles remain in the effluent, the probability of an effective spark or thermal energy transfer to the surrounding environment becomes negligible. Consequently, the proposed system serves as a viable and practical solution for mitigating exhaust-related fire hazards in hazardous environments.

Field Performance Test Sample

In this evaluation, the baseline exhaust gas temperature (without the device installed) was recorded at 173∘C. Following the installation of the prototype developed by “Sanat Projeh Tous Co.” under identical operating conditions, the exhaust gas temperature was successfully reduced to 117∘C.
